Pope Francis

Father, shepherd and guide,

look with love on Pope Francis

Through the work of your Spirit

you have called him to dedicate his life as your servant

and the pastor of our church.

Fill him with your power to speak your words

and inspire him in his guidance.

May he be your sign of unity,

so that all who have been

entrusted to his care

may know Jesus Christ more fully

and be led to eternal life in joy with you.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Born in Argentina, Pope Francis I, age 76 and the 265th Pope, is the first South American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the first Jesuit and the first non-European pope for more than 1,000 years.

In Italian, he joked with the rain-soaked crowd before delivering his blessing, saying: “As you know the duty of the conclave is to give Rome a bishop.  It seems that my brother cardinals went almost to the end of the world.“

Francis is the son of a railway worker and one of five siblings. He has a chemistry degree.

Francis is known as a conservative with “great compassion”, He is seen as orthodox on sexual matters, for instance, but liberal on social justice. He lived in a flat in Agentina and used to go to travel  on a bus rather than in a chauffeured limousine.

At a gathering of Latin American bishops in 2007, he said:  “We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least. The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers.”
