150th Anniversary BookOLD
On 30 January 2015 the school celebrates its 150th anniversary.
As well as a whole academic year of planned events, starting in September 2014, Derbyshire author and former St Mary’s Bursar, Leonie Martin, has written a book – St Mary’s Catholic High School, Chesterfield: Celebrating 150 Years – to commemorate this milestone anniversary in the school’s history.
Available from Chesterfield FC, Straight Curves and School Reception priced at £15.99, any profit made from book sales will be split equally between Ashgate Hospice and St Mary’s sister school in Burkina Faso.
The book charts the school’s history, from its opening in 1865 on Spencer Street and Cross Street to its present day site on Newbold Road in Chesterfield. It contains funny, heart-warming and tear-jerking memories, pictures and anecdotes of past pupils and staff who you may recognise.
“This book will appeal to a wide audience. It’s not just about Catholic education in Chesterfield; it’s also a social history. From the logbooks and other original sources, we have been bequeathed a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse of our community through the decades. It’s a really inspiring story!” Leonie Martin, author.

‘I didn’t enjoy my schooling and was a bad boy for most of my time at St Mary’s … but two of the teachers had a marked effect on my life and I have never forgotten them. They were Mrs Convey my English teacher, and Mr Danson my woodwork teacher.’ Richard Higgins, Past Pupil during 1950s
