Physics

In science we aim to nurture the curiosity of our students so that they are scientifically literate and ready to participate in the rich experiences available to them when they finish school. Physics is taught by enthusiastic and very knowledgeable subject specialists. We are a vibrant, academic department and encourage all of our learners to achieve their best through an exciting curriculum that builds a body of knowledge of the big ideas in physics. The study of physics is essential for many careers and we equip our learners with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the future. Over half of all students in the sixth form choose to study at least one science course.

Key Stage 4
Those students who study three separate sciences at GCSE will study AQA GCSE Physics (8463). The course is taught by experienced physics specialists and develops the ideas covered at Key Stage 3. The course assesses understanding and application of key physics concepts, and also the practical skills developed. The topics covered are:

·         Energy

·         Electricity

·         Particle model of matter

·         Atomic structure and radioactivity

·         Forces and motion

·         Waves

·         Magnetism and electromagnetism

·         Space physics

Key Stage 5
Physics is the fundamental science that develops theories to help us understand how everything in our universe works. Students who choose to study the course at A-level will study AQA A-level Physics (7408). It is taught by experienced and inspiring physics specialists. The course assesses understanding and application of key physics concepts, and also the practical skills developed. The topics covered are:

·         Measurements and their errors

·         Particles, quantum phenomena and radiation

·         Waves

·         Mechanics and materials

·         Electricity

·         Thermal physics

·         Gravitational and electric fields

·         Electromagnetism

·         Nuclear physics and radioactivity

·         Astrophysics
