Biology

As a core subject, the study of Science is fundamental in preparing our students for an ever increasing technological world.  Science is taught by enthusiastic subject specialists.  We are a vibrant, academic department and we encourage all of our learners to achieve their best through an exciting curriculum based on theoretical and practical activities.  The study of Science is essential for many careers and we equip our learners with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the future. Over half of all students in the sixth form choose to study at least one A-level Science.

The exam board is AQA and students study the units listed below from Year 9 to Year 11.  Students will also complete 28 required practical tasks as part of the GCSE course.  They will be assessed on practical skills in their GCSE papers.

Key Stage 5
Biology is a popular and enjoyable course which is delivered by experienced specialist teachers. We will follow the WJEC Eduqas A Level Biology specification. The course is well balanced covering all the main areas in Biology and allows students, as in the past, to go on to specialise in their areas of interest at university.

Practical work is an intrinsic part of this specification at A Level and practical activities will be carried out throughout the course and recorded in a lab book. Students who demonstrate the required standard across all of the necessary practicals will receive a pass grade. This will appear on the final A Level certificate alongside the overall grade awarded.
