Heavenly Father, our hearts are so full of joy now that we can say ‘Alleluia! He is risen!’ As we begin this day celebrating Jesus’s victory over death, we pray that You be near to us and continue to guide us. We pray for those who have been welcomed into the Church this Easter, for all our families and loved ones, that the Light of Christ will continue to shine in their hearts. May the joy, love and gratitude we feel today stay with us throughout Eastertide and always. Amen.

Dear God, We are reminded this Holy Saturday that you are no stranger to death, darkness, or doubt. Help us to remember as we wade within our own discomforts and fears today, that you are still alive, even when we can’t see you. You know waiting is hard. And yet you allow it, for your glory to be revealed in your perfect timing. We rest in you, Lord, as we wait on what only you can do. Amen.

O Jesus, Who by reason of Your burning love for us willed to be crucified and to shed Your Most Precious Blood for the redemption and salvation of our souls, look down upon us as we remember Your most sorrowful Passion and Death. Cleanse us from sin by Your grace, strengthen us to carry our own crosses and grant us Your peace, which is the only true peace. Amen.

Loving Father, you gather us in this upper room with your Son, to be fed by your love. At the Last Supper, Jesus commanded us to love one another and to celebrate the Mass in remembrance of Him. Open our hearts to the mysteries of the Mass and the Eucharist, so that we may come to a deeper understanding and appreciation. Bless your priests, without whom we could not have the Mass, and bless your Church with more vocations to the priesthood. Amen.

The English department arranged for the entire of Year 10 to see a performance of ‘Macbeth’ at the Leeds Playhouse last Thursday. Our pupils described the performance as ‘mesmerising’, ‘incredible’ and felt that it really helped bring their set work to life. ‘Macbeth’ is the play Year 10 students are studying in preparation for their GCSE English Literature exam. The outstanding behaviour of our pupils was recognised by the theatre staff, who said that our pupils were the best school group they had ever had. We would like to thank Mrs Evans, Mrs Taylor and the entire English Department for arranging this fantastic opportunity.

We are looking forward to showcasing our pupils' talent at the Spring Choral Concerts this evening. Doors will open half an hour before each performance, and there will be refreshments available to purchase alongside raffle tickets. Please remember to bring cash with you as we are unable to accept card payments. All proceeds will go towards the Music Department.

Our Year 10 pupils have been superb throughout their Feast Day today. The day began with a Mass for the Solemnity of St Joseph at the Annunciation Church, led by Father Adrian. The participation and conduct of the pupils was exemplary. Year 10 then had a special lunch, followed by an inspiring talk from their year group charity – Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity. This was followed by a “Primary School Sports Day” at lunchtime, with wheelbarrow and sack races, as well as highly competitive 'tug-of-wars' and 'egg and spoon' races. We are extremely proud of how well our Year 10 pupils conducted themselves throughout the day. Thank you to Mrs D Shaw (Head of Year 10) and Miss J Charmak (Faith in Action Lead) for organising the day.

Fish is the dish! Pupils have been learning about fish, as well as cooking with Alaska pink salmon, as one of the 300 schools lucky enough to have been selected for a free delivery of tinned salmon. Last Wednesday, St. Mary's welcomed students and Maths teachers from across the region to tackle the AMSP Year 10 Maths Feast, a competition focussed on problem solving in Mathematics. Students did some Fermi Estimation, tackled a challenging cross-number and had a go at constructing a rhombic dodecahedron using paper folding! One of our teams won 2 separate rounds, as well as the overall competition; a huge well done to Jacob, Louis, Ben and Dan! We also had teams finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th in the overall competition.

St Mary’s Catholic High School / 11 Mar

Last week, Dr Dando, Mr Greenslade and Mr Stone accompanied 24 Year 13 students on a visit to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), Geneva in Switzerland. The LHC is a cutting edge 27 km circumference underground particle accelerator. It has contributed a huge amount to our understanding of fundamental physics, and led to developments such as the internet and proton beam therapy. The students and staff had a fantastic time visiting the experiment and learning about its discoveries, and also exploring the beautiful lakeside Swiss city of Geneva.
