The art department is based in three teaching rooms with the addition of a sixth form studio. The department is made up of two full-time teachers and a further part-time member of staff all specialising in art, teaching staff are supported by a part-time technician. The art department offers extra access for pupils at lunch and after school throughout the week making it a busy and creative working environment. Links to Chesterfield College give sixth form students the opportunity to pursue a life drawing class alongside the A level course.
Art is taught through all year groups from years seven to thirteen. A large take up at GCSE makes Art a popular choice at St Mary’s. The success at GCSE leads on towards A Level, with many students going on to study an Art Foundation course and Art and Design specialist Degree courses. Past pupils of St Mary’s now work in a range of professional art and design careers from Graphics to Theatre Design.
All pupils at St Mary’s are taught practical skills and techniques through a range of media and processes from drawing and painting through to digital photography and Photoshop. The teaching of skills aims to give individuals the freedom and confidence to express their own creativity.
