Mrs Dot Thompson
I have served as a Foundation Governor since December 2009 and currently hold the following responsibilities: Link Governor for Chaplaincy, Governor with responsibility for Safer Recruitment and Governor with a watching brief over the implementation of the Equalities, Difference and Cohesion Policy.
My professional background is in Banking, with over 20 years experience held with a major High Street Bank.
I worked predominantly with Business, with only a fleeting stint in Retail. My last position was in Corporate during which time I was peer ranked fourth in the country. I was exceptionally privileged to work for a number of key decision makers and alongside many more hugely talented individuals, from whom I gained significant insight and benefit.
Travel has always been a passion. My preferred mode was overland, and I’ve backpacked across many remote, mostly Third World countries. Benefits are myriad; the physical and mental challenge, the raw beauty of the landscape and the uncompromising reality of confronting extreme poverty first hand. That said, it’s remarkable how many interesting people you can and do bump into, retired Oxford Dons, directors, Bond Traders and political interns to name a few. I’ve met the President of Panama and received Communion from Pope John Paul II.
I still miss the complexity and pace of my ‘old life’, but am significantly blessed in now devoting all of my energies to being a full time mum! I also help out a few hours a week at an Ofsted Outstanding Nursery. I’d like to say that life is less hectic now, but it’s not – it’s just a different kind of busy.
To relax, I listen to Radio 3 and try very hard to read music – slow and painful!
What matters to me is that every child is valued for who they are, and their life chances improved through their time at St Marys. Having worked closely with fellow Governors and Staff for a number of years now, I know how hard people work to make St Mary’s exactly what it is – an outstanding centre of excellence.
I am proud to serve as a Foundation Governor.
