Dr Maureen Strelley
I was appointed over 4 years ago as the Local Authority governor (now the Community Governor) for St Mary’s High School.
I sit on the Personnel, Curriculum, Community and Standards Committee of the governing body. In this role I am particularly involved in the processes by which governors hold to account the school leaders for the progress and attainment of pupils of all abilities and monitor the work of the school.
I attended St Mary’s Primary and Junior School before the High School was opened and went on to a degree in medicine at Oxford University. I have experience of University education and the need for rigorous academic standards.
I led a General Practice in Bolsover for over 20 years and this gives me a broad knowledge of families in an area designated high deprivation. This leads me to focus on the attainment within the school of Pupil Premium pupils, an important role of a governor. I have an ability to work as part of a team and to lead a team from my work in the Heath Service. I enjoy working with people of all ages.
I have two dogs, play bridge and the piano, and try to learn to play golf! I am a member, and this year the president of Chesterfield Inner Wheel, and I also sit on disability and work related Appeals Tribunals as a member of the judiciary. I am a governor of Derbyshire Community Heath Care Foundation Trust.
As a governor I value the opportunity to give back to the school community those skills and abilities which were forged initially in Chesterfield. The Music and Drama at St Mary’s is a particular joy. I am particularly proud of the School’s ability to demonstrate progress and performance in pupils of all academic levels and the ongoing commitment to quality in every aspect of education.
