Dear Parents/Carers

Sponsored Walk Tuesday 29 June 2021

We are anticipating that our annual sponsored walk will take place on Tuesday 29 June, in line with national COVID-19 guidelines. Our sponsored walk is a special event where pupils and staff work together to raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare.

All pupils in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will walk a 6-mile route around Holmebrook Valley Park and Linacre Reservoirs, unless, for medical reasons, they are unable to do so. We ask pupils to try to gather as many sponsors as they can in order to raise money for this very worthy cause. There is a sponsorship form attached to this letter for your child to use, or alternatively contributions can be made through ParentPay. Your support in helping your child to raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare would be greatly appreciated.

The route is marshalled by our staff, with regular check points along the route. Staff members will also be walking the route with pupils. Year 12 pupils are enlisted to form additional marshals and Year 12 are also encouraged to collect money for the cause.

Lunch will be available as usual in school before the walk commences. There will also be drinks provided at the half way point. Pupils are encouraged to bring their own drinks too. An ice-cream van will also be available en-route so pupils may wish to bring a small amount of money for this. Pupils should wear comfortable, sensible shoes for walking. They also need to wear appropriate clothing; the wearing of shorts is discouraged as there are certain paths along the route that are lined with nettles. Pupils need to bring appropriate protection from the weather e.g. an anorak, sun cream, sun hat.

During the walk pupils are expected to:

– be ambassadors for our school in terms of their excellent behaviour, and not do anything that would jeopardise the safety of others.
– report to one of the regular check points if they have any issues.
– sign in at the half way point in Linacre Woods and on return to school at the end.
– not to accept lifts from strangers.
– not to lose sight of the walkers in front of them.
– not to walk alone.
– adhere to the country code: do not drop litter, keep in single file when crossing fields, do not alarm any animals and leave all gates as they were.

On this day, pupils will be allowed to leave school from 2.45pm onwards depending on when they have completed the walk. Please note, however, the school buses will be leaving at the usual time of 3:35pm.The sponsored walk is a wonderful opportunity for the whole school to do something positive together, particularly after the disruption and uncertainty of the past year. Please encourage your child to be involved and to gain as many sponsors as possible. However, if for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate in this walk please contact your child’s Head of Year by Friday 18 June.

Thank you!

Yours faithfully
